A California Prickly Pear Cactus (opuntia; cactaceae) was scarred with a knife and placed in a darkroom. For one month an intervalometer was set to take a photograph every 30 minutes. The resulting 1,407 images track the scarred cactus pad (cladode) scabbing over and healing itself. In a darkroom with no water or natural light, the cactus heals its wounds. This exploration has resulted in mixed media representations exploring the cactus as a symbol for nature’s ability to provide and adapt, as well as our human inability to remove ourselves and our destructive tendencies from our systems of exploration and understanding.
